Crest Trail Information
Region 1, Sec E: NW Angeles National Forest
This site is to simplify the sharing of Section E trailwork
info with PCTA leadership and volunteers, Angeles National Forest staff,
and local trail hostels who can share info with trail users. While not
all-inclusive of trail conditions, it's more of a log of trail inventories
and when available, specific information from users. I hope you find
it useful as a means of sharing info! - Kevin

January 5, 2008:
I started a new PCT blog here,
and all future info will get posted there. It includes links back
to this page, for future access to the archived trail reports.
December 20 2007:
I inventoried the Tejon Ranch segment, that report is
filed here. It does not include brushing progress
made by the PCTA volunteer crew on Nov 1.
Also, here's the Spunky-Dowd Canyons status
map, with brushed section shown in green.
Sept 8 2007:
We'll be out working in the Pine Canyon area next weekend,
contact myself or Dave Fleischman if you can join us. Also, enjoy some
trail humor here, a slideshow from photos
taken by 'Trail Boss' Pat Aubuchon at the Lake Elizabeth Canyon Rd crossing
earlier this year. I took the liberty of adding the fun captions.

March 31 2007:
Scouters May Frey and Ian McGarrough of Palmdale Troop
146 made and mounted a new mileage sign at Bouquet Canyon Road. The original
sign burned in the fire a few years ago. Here's a photo of Ian
with the new sign. BIG THANKS to Mac and Ian for their service to trail
users!
Pete and Jerry have progressed on brushing in Spunky-Dowd
Canyons, here's the latest status map.
A crew of PCTA volunteers worked the mile behind the
sag pond in Pine Canyon, check out Dave's photos
of the great work they did.
March 12 2007:
Pete and company cleared the broken trees in 'Jay's Camp'
above Pine Cyn Road, and brushed behind the sag pond. Word from Dave
Fleischman is that the planned Vasquez Rocks project is off for this spring,
so some calendar rearranging will happen and the Pine Cyn area will hopefully
benefit. Here are some photos of the crew's work on the trees at
Jay's Camp:

February 17, 2007:
The High Desert Runners continue working their adopted
PCT stretch in Spunky-Dowd canyons area. Feb
17 status map shows 2.1 miles is now brushed; it's probably 95% cleared,
and some has been treaded. Marv "Super"Powers is the PCT Hero of
the Week, and here is a photo of some treading
he did this week just south of the firebreak. Marv treaded out all the
trail that Pete and Jerry brushed on Thursday! Marv as many of you
know began working this adopted stretch years ago - I'm told 18 years ago
- back when he was just a young 60-year old kid. Marv is awesome.
Pete, Dave, Jerry, Vern and Don will be hitting those
trees above Pine Canyon Mon/Tues.
February 10, 2007:
Pat Aubuchon's Trail Boss crews worked recently in San
Francisquito Canyon, but I haven't been out to see their good work yet.
Sweco crew left the Pine Canyon area. A report
of Pine Canyon's current state is posted here.
I found out that the Rim of the World Motorsports Rally
won't be held in Angeles NF anymore (Link)
so that event won't be a scheduling constraint for us again.
January 31, 2007 Update
ANF is still working with the Sweco in Pine Canyon, totalling
8 days.
Hiked up the mountain to Horse Camp last week, here
is my report on the broken trees at Horse Camp. Pete Fish will
be working with a crew of volunteers there Feb 19-20, but presently I'd
not consider it passable for stock.
High Desert Runners have scheduled more work days in
February for their stretch. Work there continues on removal of cuttings
from the trail.
January 19, 2007 Update
New calendar dates above.
Pete Fish was recognized last night at the Santa Monica
REI for his outstanding service and leadership in stewarding the southernmost
700 miles of The Trail. Pete earned the PCTA a $20,000 donation from
REI. Big congratulations to Pete!
EIGHT work projects (by various crews) are being worked
in Section E during Dec / Jan. A Pete Fish - led PCTA volunteer crew
and High Desert Runners are intermittently working the Spunky / Dowd Canyons
area. Their next swipe at it will be next week.
USFS -ANF has planned Jan 22-25 for the SWECO dozer crew
to rehab the trail in the burn area above
Pine Canyon Road. I hope to get out January 26 to inventory this
stretch and see how much hand-work remains. Check back here
for that update.
I also received event dates from Vern Biehl and posted
info on the Leona Divide 50 in the calendar section above. We're
always curious about their events scheduling so we don't end up planning
a project in their event area on the same day. THANKS to Vern, and
to Glenda Kimmerly who organizes the Leona Divide 50.
ALSO, Mac Frey's scouts in Quartz Hill are going make
a new sign to replace the one that burned in the Bouquet Canyon fire.
January 2, 2007 Update
The Student Conservation
Association crew brushed and treaded the two miles southbound from
road 6N09. It looks great! Here's a before
- after comparison of one repair they made in that stretch. Big
thanks and congratulations go to SCA's PCT crew out of Joshua Tree for
their effort on our trail!
I updated the calendar above to reflect agreement between
PCTA and HDR to continue brushing in the Spunky / Dowd Canyon area. Like
in November, a PCTA volunteer crew will cut and an HDR crew will clear
on the following Saturday.
Still to be scheduled: trail repair on the burned north
slope of Liebre Mtn / Pine Cyn area. ANF will be retreading the trail
there with a Sweco Trail Dozer, and ANF's Howard Okamoto will coordinate
with us. I expect to get out and re-inventory the entire stretch to the
top of Liebre Mtn after they complete, weather allowing.

I archived the old trail
inventories to update this page.
